A statewide coalition kicked off efforts last week to qualify a new energy choice initiative for the November ballot. I-2066: Protect Energy Choice protects reliable, affordable energy choices for consumers and small businesses and prohibits natural gas bans in Washington.

The group filed Initiative 2066 in response to a series of regulatory and legislative decisions threatening access to the state’s supply of natural gas now and into the future.

In 2023, Washington State enacted new energy codes that heavily discourage natural gas use in new construction and some remodels by making it significantly more expensive compared to electric options. Additionally, a 2024 bill (ESHB 1589) mandates Puget Sound Energy (PSE) to phase out natural gas for all customers, despite its current affordability compared to electricity. Critics argue these measures, which effectively ban natural gas, will substantially increase living costs across the state.

The Washington Hospitality Association and other stakeholders assert that such policies will lead to higher expenses for utilities, homes, businesses, and consumer goods. They advocate for the right to choose between natural gas and electricity without government mandates.

To counter these policies, Initiative I-2066 seeks to protect the use of natural gas by preventing state and local bans, ensuring continued gas service, and avoiding forced electrification. The initiative does not compel the use of natural gas, nor does it eliminate incentives for electric alternatives. Supported by various industry groups, the initiative's backers aim to gather sufficient signatures to place it on the November ballot, thereby giving voters a chance to decide.
